A project should identify its specific reference, intended meaning and responsible reviewer before translating a motif into fired-clay modules. Geometry, material and performance then need separate coordination.


Begin with a Specific Cultural Brief
Define the place, community, historical period, building type and source material relevant to the project. Geometric star networks, polygonal grids, interlacing linework, vegetal arabesque, calligraphy and pierced screens have different histories and uses. Do not treat them as synonyms or copy a motif from an unattributed image.
Record primary references, publication details, museum or archive sources and the interpretation approved by the design team. For a civic, religious or culturally sensitive project, involve an appropriate historian, artist, community representative or cultural adviser. Select the Terracotta Product Family
A pattern can be expressed with individual carved or moulded bricks, relief tiles, mosaics, pierced blocks, baguettes or another custom fired-clay element. Each creates a different relationship between mass, line, opening, joint and shadow. Start with the intended wall role: bonded veneer, mechanically supported cladding, freestanding or supported screen, interior feature, landscape element or another application.

Control Geometry, Joints and Tolerances
Build the motif as a vector or parametric system rather than tracing a low-resolution image. Define the base grid, repeat, symmetry operations, line widths, intersection rules and allowable simplification. Test whether the geometry survives the proposed module size, relief depth and joint width.
Fired-clay units vary within declared manufacturing tolerances. The setting-out strategy should absorb variation without cumulative drift. Establish datum lines, module zones and permitted adjustments. Avoid tiny points, fragile projections, deep undercuts or narrow webs until manufacturing, handling and attachment are reviewed. Number special pieces and show their orientation.
At corners and openings, decide whether the pattern wraps, mirrors, stops, changes scale or uses a border. A clean termination is usually more deliberate than an accidental crop. Full-scale setting-out drawings should coordinate every special with the support or substrate.
Use Light, Shadow and Colour Deliberately
Relief and perforation change throughout the day as light direction and viewing distance shift. Study the facade orientation and critical viewpoints. Renderings can compare options, but physical samples reveal edge softness, fired colour, glaze response and shadow depth more reliably.
Approve representative colour ranges rather than one ideal piece. If multiple colours form the geometry, document their codes, proportions, placement rules and acceptable variation. If a mosaic scale is more appropriate, review the terracotta mosaic tile range as a separate product family with its own substrate and installation requirements.
Separate Pattern Approval from Performance
An approved motif does not approve the wall system. The project still needs structural design, substrate or subframe coordination, anchors or bonding, movement, joints, water management, fire strategy, impact review, access and maintenance. For open screens, define wind actions, element spans, support points, rotation control, opening geometry and safe access. For veneer, define substrate preparation, attachment, movement joints and interface details.
Do not claim that geometry automatically provides shading, ventilation, privacy, daylight or energy savings. Those outcomes depend on orientation, depth, open area, spacing, glazing, climate and surrounding context. Use project-specific simulation or analysis where performance matters.
Sample, Mock Up and Record the Approval
