Important correction: An earlier version of this 2013 article incorrectly described terracotta panels as Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete (GRC). They are different materials and systems. Architectural terracotta panels are fired-clay products; GRC is a cement-based composite. The guidance below has been rewritten to address terracotta rainscreen panels accurately.

Panel format and orientation
Horizontal panels can reinforce floor lines and create long bands across an elevation. Vertical panels emphasize height and may align with fins, columns or narrow window modules. Both directions are possible, but they may require different profiles, rail layouts and joint details.
Very large or long units can reduce the number of joints, yet they also affect extrusion, drying, firing, transport, handling and allowable span. Confirm feasibility before the facade module is fixed. The manufacturer needs elevation drawings, typical sections and the intended support points—not only a face dimension.
Flat, grooved and relief surfaces
A flat panel produces a calm background and places more emphasis on the overall grid. Grooves and combed textures create fine shadows and can make slight color variation read more naturally. Deeper relief changes the facade at different sun angles and viewing distances, but it also affects profile depth, weight and cleaning.
Surface direction matters. A texture approved on a small desk sample may look quite different when repeated across a large elevation. A full-size mockup should show the real panel orientation, joint widths, corners and adjacent materials.
Natural-fired colors and glazed finishes
Natural-fired terracotta gains its color through the clay body and firing process. Modest variation between units is part of its character. Glazed panels expand the color and sheen options, but glaze development, edge coverage, reflectance and acceptable variation should still be confirmed with representative samples.
Do not approve color from a screen alone. Review physical pieces under daylight and define an accepted range rather than relying on a single “perfect” tile. For future maintenance, retain project records and spare panels because a later production batch may not match exactly.
What performance benefits can terracotta provide?
A durable external finish
Fired clay can provide a stable architectural surface when the correct product and installation are selected for the exposure. Durability claims should be supported by product-specific evidence for relevant properties such as water absorption, freeze-thaw resistance, strength or chemical exposure.
A non-combustible clay component
The fired-clay panel itself is an inorganic material, but project fire compliance must use the classification required in the destination market. The complete facade also includes insulation, membranes, cavity barriers, rails and fixings, which require their own assessment.
A drained and ventilated rainscreen
Terracotta panels can form the outer screen of a ventilated facade. The cavity helps drainage and ventilation, while insulation and the weather barrier sit behind the cladding. The panel alone is not the building’s waterproofing or thermal-insulation layer.
Individual panel replacement
A mechanically fixed system can allow damaged units to be removed and replaced, depending on the rail and access design. Replacement planning should consider installation sequence, spare material and the possibility of color variation between firing batches.
Fixings and subframe are part of the selection
The panel cannot be specified separately from its support concept. Review clip engagement, rails, brackets, anchors, joint widths, cavity depth and movement allowances together. Wind pressure is usually higher at building corners and edges, so one support spacing may not suit every facade zone.
Special conditions—including soffits, parapets, window reveals, external corners and cut pieces—should appear in the early drawings. These areas may require purpose-made units, metal closures or modified fixing details. Are terracotta panels lightweight?
Weight varies by profile, thickness and dimensions. Use the mass per panel or per square metre for the exact proposed product rather than a general comparison with brick, stone or GRC.
Do terracotta panels insulate a building?
The panels are the outer cladding layer. Most thermal performance comes from the insulation and control of thermal bridges in the complete wall assembly.
Can the same panel be installed horizontally and vertically?
Not automatically. Orientation can affect profile selection, fixing, drainage, span and joint details. Confirm the intended direction with the manufacturer and facade engineer.
Which option is best for a custom facade?
There is no universal best option. The most suitable panel balances design intent, manufacturability, structural requirements, mockup approval, installation and budget.
