A terracotta stair treads and risers specification must connect each clay unit to the geometry, exposure, substrate, testing, and installation design of the stair. A tread, riser, bullnose or nosing piece, landing tile, and facade panel are not interchangeable names. Establish the product boundary first, then verify dimensions, edges, surface, joints, support, and project-specific performance before approval.

Separate the Parts of the Stair

The tread is the horizontal walking surface; the riser closes the vertical face between steps. The front edge may use an integral bullnose profile, a separate nosing unit, or another designed edge detail. Landings may use coordinating floor tiles rather than the tread piece. Coordinate Nominal and Actual Dimensions

Do not design the stair around a catalogue label alone. Request actual product dimensions, stated tolerances, edge geometry, squareness or bow criteria where relevant, and the proposed joint width. Compare them with the structural stair, screed or levelling layer, adhesive or bedding system, finished rise and going, landing level, nosing projection, and adjacent wall finishes.

Provide stair plans, sections, elevations, end conditions, and a piece schedule. Identify left- and right-hand ends, open strings, curved or tapered steps, corners, thresholds, and cuts. If the design depends on custom dimensions or a special edge, obtain written feasibility and a fired sample before freezing the construction set.

Specify Edge and Surface Without Assuming Safety

A rounded bullnose changes the edge form, while grooves or a textured face change surface geometry. Neither feature by itself proves slip resistance or code compliance. State the intended environment: interior dry, intermittently wet, exterior exposed, entrance, food-service, or another condition. Then identify the applicable jurisdiction, test method, specimen condition, direction, classification, and acceptance criterion with the project designer or code consultant.

  • Request test evidence for the exact or technically representative product, finish, and surface direction.
  • Check whether testing was conducted wet, dry, contaminated, new, conditioned, or by another specified method.
  • Coordinate drainage, cleaning, lighting, handrails, visual contrast, and stair geometry as separate design responsibilities.
  • Record any sealer, treatment, or maintenance regime that could alter the tested surface.
  • Avoid publishing a universal “non-slip” or safety value when no project method has been selected.

Verify the Installation Interface

The tile supplier does not define the entire stair assembly. The project team must coordinate the structural base, preparation, moisture condition, falls, waterproofing where required, compatible adhesive or bedding, coverage, jointing material, movement joints, perimeter joints, edge restraint, and curing or protection sequence. Exterior and wet locations need particular attention to water paths and exposed edges.

Large or projecting pieces may create different handling and support questions from standard floor tiles. Confirm whether a proposed unit is fully bedded, mechanically supported, or installed by another engineered method. Do not adapt a facade-panel fixing detail to a walked-on stair without a specific design. Approve a Representative Stair Mock-Up

A useful mock-up includes at least a tread, riser, front edge, joints, an exposed end or corner where applicable, and the specified substrate and installation materials. If slip testing is required on the assembled surface, define the method and responsibility before the mock-up is built.

  3. Separate pieces by stair, level, hand, or sequence when the schedule requires it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are tread, riser, and bullnose tiles the same product?

No. They describe different roles or profiles. One project may combine a walking-surface tile, vertical riser piece, integral or separate edge unit, and landing tile. Confirm each item in a coordinated schedule.

Does a grooved or bullnose edge guarantee slip resistance?

No. Surface shape alone is not a performance classification. Specify the applicable test method, condition, direction, criterion, and representative product, then review current evidence for the project.

Can the stair dimensions be taken from one product-page size?

Not safely. Confirm actual selected-item dimensions and tolerances against the structural stair, intended joint, bedding thickness, finished rise and going, landing, and edge detail.

Can terracotta stair units be installed like facade panels?
