Terracotta Panel Environmental Performance: Evidence Guide
Assess terracotta panel environmental impacts across materials, manufacturing, transport, use and end of life with product-specific LCA or EPD evidence.
Terracotta panel environmental performance should be described with a defined product, factory, data period, life-cycle boundary and evidence source. Natural-clay origin does not by itself establish low carbon, low energy, recyclability or better performance than another facade material. Firing, transport, support systems, service conditions and end-of-life routes all matter.
This guide shows how to organize a product-specific review using a life-cycle assessment, environmental product declaration or other transparent data. It does not assign an environmental rating to every LOPO panel or to a complete building.
Define the Question Before Collecting Data
State the selected panel model, dimensions, finish, manufacturing site, quantity, project location and installed assembly. Then define the comparison unit and life-cycle stages. A panel measured by mass cannot be compared directly with a complete wall measured by area and years of service.

Review Raw Materials Without Green Shortcuts
Ask for composition information at the level permitted by commercial confidentiality. Identify pigments, glazes, surface treatments, adhesives, mesh or metal inserts in addition to the clay body. A statement that a product is natural does not quantify extraction, processing, transport, emissions or toxicity-related indicators.
Check whether sourcing and recycled-content claims are measured, which mass basis they use and what time period they cover. Do not describe clay as renewable or a product as chemical-free without a defined and credible basis.
Measure Manufacturing at the Relevant Factory
Terracotta production can include raw-material preparation, extrusion or forming, drying, firing, cutting, grinding, glazing, sorting and packing. Environmental results depend on energy sources, kiln operation, product yield, rejected units, water management and the selected finish.

Include Transport, Packaging and Installation
Panel geometry affects packing density and crate requirements, while project distance and transport mode affect delivery impacts. Record the route and scenario instead of claiming that a lighter or hollow product automatically has low transport emissions.
Installation can add substantial materials outside the panel: rails, brackets, anchors, clips, flashings, membranes and insulation. Compare equivalent assemblies and functions. A product-only declaration should not be presented as a whole-wall result.
Separate Product Properties from Building Use
A ventilated cavity, insulation layer, shading design or thermal mass may influence building behavior, but energy use depends on the complete envelope, climate, orientation, glazing, occupancy and building services. Use project thermal calculations and energy modelling where required. Do not assign heating or cooling savings to the visible panel alone.
Use-stage scenarios should include inspection, cleaning, access, panel replacement and component repairs appropriate to the design. There is no universal maintenance interval or service life. State the assumed period, evidence and sensitivity if it influences the result.
Model End of Life Realistically
Technical separability is not the same as an available reuse or recycling route. Identify how panels, metals, insulation and membranes can be removed and separated, whether contamination limits recovery, and which local facilities accept them. Include transport and processing assumptions.
A mechanically fixed panel may offer replacement or disassembly options, but that does not prove closed-loop recycling. Claims such as fully recyclable should identify the actual product, process, region and responsible operator.
Read an EPD or LCA Critically
- Confirm the named product or product group, manufacturer, factory and geography.
- Check the declared or functional unit and any reference service period.
- Record the programme, product category rules, standard, verifier and validity dates.
- Identify included and excluded life-cycle modules, cut-offs and allocation methods.
- Review data year, primary-data share, background databases and scenarios.
- Check whether packaging, transport, substructure, installation loss and replacements are included.
- Read limitations, uncertainty and additional environmental information.
Two EPD results are not automatically comparable. Units, product category rules, boundaries, data quality and scenarios should align, and the compared products must provide an equivalent facade function. Use Claims That Match the Evidence
Prefer statements such as an identified EPD reports a result for a named product and boundary over broad labels such as eco-friendly, zero pollution or energy saving. If no product-specific LCA or EPD is available, say which data are available and which conclusions cannot yet be supported.
